Dear Head Teacher (学校によっては、Principal,Schoolmaster もあり得ます)

I take the liberty of addressing this letter to you on an educational issue of world concern.I am referring to the necessity of education on the promotion of world peace and the preservation of environment. Discussions on such matters are conducted to a larger or lesser extent in every country and at every school and no doubt in your school too. But I do beg to offer you a certain proposal for a joint effort with all countries of the world and their schools.

I am Principal of (英語で学校名). I have been contacted by a Japanese NGO (Non Governmental Organization) to cooperate in its campaign and am strongly inclined to support them. The NGO called "The Blue Star of Life (TBSL)" is in the process of preparing an event which times with the 60th Anniversary in 2005 of the Founding of the United Nations Organization.

TBSL, as a matter of fact and history, is an outgrowth of the now defunct NGO called "Tobe International Art Club (TIAO." Tobe International Art Club in 1995 donated a giant porcelain globe (1.05 meter in diameter) embodying the fervent prayer of peace and environnental preservation to the United Nations European Headquarters in Geneva. It was in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary and the globe was placed in a fitting manner in the spacious lobby facing the Assembly Hall formerly used as the Council Room during the times of the League of the Nations and now used for the meeting of the Conference on Disarmament.

Ten years hence, namely next year,TBSL wishes to pick up where its predecessor TIAC left off and place small pebbles in the globe as TIAC did place 50 odd pebbles collected from developing countries. Incidentally, in 2000, TIAC sent a small delegation of people to install some additional pebbles as an interim measure. Culture differs from country to country. But it is a known practice in many,if not all countries that stone or rock is viewed as sign of eternal sanctity and a tacit testimony of mankind;s prayers, aspirations and endeavors.

Having said this, I like to come to the very point of my-and TBSL's--request. We propose to include additional pebbles from all the countries of the world in the Globe in 2005 and the pebbles should be assembled by young people with a conviction that genuine prayers should take concrete form and that each pebble may convey the earnest desire of the people seeking peace and environmental preservation. I am hoping that your pupils, like my school's pupils, will join in the campaign to collect pebbles and I am requesting to consider agreeing to the whole concept and advising some, if not all, pupils to collect and send the pebbles to my school. I will pass them on to the secretariat of TBSL Organizing Committee.

This will be a sort of extramural activities but the educational impact on pupil, whether they will collect or not, will be quite extensive. I am confident that you will give careful and favorable consideration to my proposal.

I am enclosing herewith a few letters of request signed by my pupils and ask you to give them to your pupils. I am hoping that friendship thus started may well develop into a durable one and that the pupils across the border may someday be king for peace and development of the world, god only knows, in Geneva or New York.

Sincerely yours,
