5th Speaker: Mr. Hudson Kalaeda (Instructor at a Saitama middle school)Ladies
and Gentlemen. Distinguished guests.
It is a great privilege and an honor for me to make a short speech today
to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
Today I would like to discuss something that has affected my people and
me in recent years, Global Warming. Where I come from, the Solomon Islands
is threatened by the rising waters of the Pacific Ocean, brought on by
the melting of the ice caps. The sea level is rapidly rising every year.
The place where I used to play when I was a child is no more; it has been
completely submerged under water. Other Islands and nations near by are
experiencing the same phenomenon.
Islands nations such as Tuvalu and Kiribati have already experienced the
evils that global warming brings. Entire islands are being eroded away
and waves rushing straight over the Islands decimating communities.
The people in my country don't care who started the global warming process;
all they can see is their houses, communities, and livelihoods slowly disappearing.
What we urgently need is for people to accept that global warming is a
worldwide problem that can only be solved by a combined worldwide effort.
And I believe this should be done through the auspices of the United Nations,
as it is the only organization that truly represents all nations big and
small.
I would like to close by reading part of a poem written about the plight
that faces Tuvalu and its people. One of the many victims of global warming.
I hear the waves on our island shore.
They sound much louder than they did before.
A rising swell flecked with foam.
Threatens the existence of our island home.
Our people are leaving for a distant shore.
And soon Tuvalu may be no more.
Holding on to the things they know are true.
Tuvalu my Tuvalu, I cry for you.

本日は、国際連合創設60周年を記念して、 短いスピーチができますことは、私の大きな名誉とするところであります。
本日私は、私の同朋と私に近年影響を与えてきている、あることを取り上げたいと思います。 地球温暖化がそれです。
私の出身国ソロモン諸島は、氷山がとけることによりもたらされた太平洋の水位上昇によって脅威にさらされています。
海水面は毎年急速に上昇しつつあります。 私が子どもの頃よく遊んだところは、もうなくなりました。 完全に水面下に沈んでしまったのです。 近くの諸島も国々も同じ現象を経験しつつあるのです。
ツバルとかキリバスのような島嶼国は、すでに地球温暖化がもたらす様々な害悪を経験いたしております。島すべてが浸蝕されつつあり、波が次々と島を襲い、人々の住む社会を減少させているのです。
私の国の国民は、地球温暖化の過程が誰によって始められたかはどうでもいいと思っています。 彼等は、自分たちの家が、社会が、生活の場が、 徐々に消え去りつつあることを目の当たりにしているのです。
緊急に我々が必要とするのは、地球温暖化は全世界にわたる連携された努力によってのみ解決されうる全世界的問題であることを人々がしっかりと受け止めることなのです。そして､このことは、大小を問わずすべての国々を本当に代表する唯一の組織であるところの国際連合の首唱の下でなされるべきだと､私は信じています。
私のスピーチを締めくくるにあたり、地球温暖化の犠牲者のひとつたるツバルとその国民が直面する苦しい境地をテーマにした詩の一部を朗読いたしたいと思います。
「わが島の岸を洗う波の音を聞く
波の音は昔の音より大きく響いている
水のうねりは白い泡と共にせりあがる
島の家庭の存続を危うくしている
島の人々は遠く離れた海辺を求めて去ろうとしている
そして間もなくツバルは存在しなくなるだろう。
彼らが真実であると知っていることがらをしっかり抱きしめて。
ツバル、私のツバル、 私はあなたのために涙を抑えられない。
